What Does "Lets Share The Pie" Mean To Me?

As someone who has been running a fledgling landscaping business for the better part of 5 years, I’ve often found myself fighting with the idea of growing the business as I grapple with the idea of profiting from the work of others. While I love being in control of the direction of the business and playing with nifty tools and making decisions on efficiency and growth, and recognize the need for management of resources and decision making, I am not interested in having dozens of people under me working purely for my benefit.

As such, it occurred to me that what I want is to share the growth, freedom, and profits of my landscaping business with others, as well as my other ideas and ventures like video game development and expanding the landscaping business into other areas. The natural answer to this is to turn it into a co-op of some sort, which led me to think... maybe that could be something to grow too.

To spell it out, “Let’s Share The Pie” means for us, as a society, to do a better job of spreading out “The Pie”—the wealth, resources, labor, and abundance that our society contains. There are many ideas and concepts that come to mind when we think “sharing the wealth,” anywhere from higher taxes on the wealthy to laws that require them to pay more, to a cap on income in general. While these all have their merits, my philosophy on the matter is: “Rather than ask for it, let’s build it ourselves.”

The core goal of Let’s Share The Pie is this:
To connect, link, and merge new and existing co-op/worker-owned businesses into a tight and (as much as possible) self-sustaining network to prove that a profit-driven hierarchy is not the only way business and the economy can succeed.

Workers who own a stake, a true stake, in business, industry, and operations will necessarily do what is best for themselves and their peers, and Let’s Share The Pie seeks to prove that.

So What Does This Look Like?

While the concept’s objective is clear, the structure of such an endeaver is still up in the air. Many ideas and theories on the matter have been discussed among myself and my peers, and I have concluded that, in some form, "Let’s Share The Pie" would exist as its own entity. Either as an umbrella organization encompassing all the other businesses, organizations, charities, and foundations, or as a separate entity that partners with various organizations to advance the cause in different ways. There is also, of course, the possibility of a hybrid approach.

But the core question remains: Should Let’s Share The Pie become its own organization to embody the concept, or should it serve as a tool for others to use? While this idea continues to evolve, I believe it is time to reach out to those around me for their thoughts, interest, and ideas. After all, this kind of initiative is not achieved by one person alone, but by a group of like minded, motivated individuals.
